What to do if you’ve had a New Roof put on your home...OR are considering it.
Florida Building Code for roof coverings changed on March 1st, 2002. If you have a roofing permit application date on or after March 1st, 2002, you could be missing out on some serious savings. These savings pertain to the Windstorm Coverage on your Homeowners Insurance policy. These discounts are determined by a Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form, or “Wind Mit”. If your entire home was constructed after 03/01/2002, you should be getting the maximum discounts. However, if your home was built before then, you should get a Wind Mit inspection, especially if you’ve had a new roof put on since 2002. These Inspections typically cost around $65, but will likely save you hundreds of dollars EACH YEAR.
In fact, if your home was built post-1975, you’re likely missing out on some discounts if you don’t have a Wind Mit. In the mid-1970’s, builders started installing Hurricane Clips in roofs much more frequently as we learned that they could help protect our roofs from heavy winds. This, in turn, led insurance companies to believe that homes with Hurricane Clips should have less expensive insurance. Better roof, lower cost of insurance. You still need the Wind Mit inspection to prove that your roof is strong, and that your policy deserves the discounts.
Our agency just had a Wind Mit inspection done for a current client whose home was built in 1996. The client had a new roof put on in 2013. The clients’ cost of Homeowners Insurance went down by more than $600 per year. This is the possibility, simply by getting a $65 inspection. Not all Wind Mit inspections can save you $600, but it’s worth the cost of the inspection if you meet the criteria.
In short, we recommend you get a Wind Mit inspection if:
You have a new roof built in the last 14 years.
Your home was built between 1975 and 2002.
Our agency can help you schedule the inspection. We understand these details can be complicated, so always feel free to call our office and discuss the discounts you could be missing out on.
